Confirmation - Lesson 12

Gifts of the Holy Spirit

In the Book of Isaiah 11:2-3, we learn the Gifts of the Holy Spirit. In the passage, the gifts are considered ones that Jesus, the Messiah would have possessed. Through Jesus, we also receive the Gifts of the Holy Spirit in the Sacraments of Baptism and Confirmation.

Prayer to the Holy Spirit

Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful.
And kindle in them the fire of your love.
Send forth your Spirit and they shall be created.
And you will renew the face of the earth.

Lord,
by the light of the Holy Spirit
you have taught the hearts of your faithful.
In the same Spirit
help us to relish what is right
and always rejoice in your consolation.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.
Amen.

  • Wisdom

  • Understanding

Holiness Focus ...

The Blessed Virgin Mary was filled with the Holy Spirit at the Annunciation when the Angel Gabriel announced that she would be the mother of Jesus.

Mary was also present with the Apostles when the Holy Spirit descended upon them at Pentecost.

The Holy Spirit did incredible things in Mary's life and he can do incredible things in your life too.

Ask Mary to pray for you to have an open heart to receive the gifts of the Holy Spirit at your Confirmation.

Discussion / Reflection

Have you ever given someone a gift and he or she was ungrateful? How did that make you feel?

Which of the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit do you feel most in need of at this time in your life?

How would your life be better if you really opened yourself up to the gifts of the Holy Spirit?

Discuss these questions with your parents or sponsor OR write your thoughts in a Confirmation journal.

Closing Prayer

Prayer for the 7 Gifts of the Holy Spirit

O Lord Jesus Christ, before ascending into heaven you promised to send the Holy Spirit to finish your work in the souls of your Apostles and disciples. Grant that I may be open to the work of that same Spirit within me.

Grant me the Spirit of Wisdom that I may not be attached to the perishable things of this world and seek the things that are eternal,

the Spirit of Understanding to enlighten my mind with the light of your divine truth,

the Spirit of Counsel that I may choose the surest way of pleasing God and gaining Heaven,

the Spirit of Fortitude that I may bear my cross with you, and that I may overcome with courage all the obstacles that oppose my salvation,

the Spirit of Knowledge that I may know God and know myself,

the Spirit of Piety that I may find the service of God sweet and attractive,

the Spirit of Fear of the Lord that I may be filled with a loving reverence towards God, and avoid anything that would displease Him.

Mark me, dear Lord, with the sign of your true disciples and animate me in all things with your Spirit. Amen.

We have created a discussion forum for the Parish of St. Timothy Confirmation Group. Every week there will be a new topic of discussion related to that week's lesson. The forum is open only to those participating in the 2020 / 2021 Confirmation preparation program.

Here's where I'll be verifying your participation.

This forum is a place for serious, courteous discussion about spiritual-related topics. I don't want to see rude or unnecessarily silly comments or questions. Any unacceptable posts will be deleted, the student will lose access to the forum and we will communicate with your parents.

This week in the forum ...
