Confirmation - Lesson 21

Holiness Is Possible

"Only in holiness does man become that for which God created him. Only in holiness does man find real harmony between himself and his Creator. Holiness, however, is not some sort of self-made perfection; rather, it is union with the incarnate love that is Christ. Anyone who gains new life in this way finds himself and becomes holy." YouCat (Youth Catechism) #342

Prayer to the Holy Spirit

Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful.
And kindle in them the fire of your love.
Send forth your Spirit and they shall be created.
And you will renew the face of the earth.

Lord,
by the light of the Holy Spirit
you have taught the hearts of your faithful.
In the same Spirit
help us to relish what is right
and always rejoice in your consolation.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.
Amen.

What does it mean to be holy as God is holy?

Reflection

What does it mean to be HOLY?

To be Holy means to be unique, to be set apart from what is common, imperfect, or wicked. It also means to be set apart for the service and worship of God.

  • God is Holy - he is unique - there is no one like him - he is perfect.

  • Sacred places are called holy - they are set apart for God.

  • The priests' vestments and the vessels we use at mass are holy objects - they are set apart from other objects for the worship of God.

  • When we are baptized - we are set apart for God - we are called to become like him - holy.

The Little Way suggests that we can grow in holiness just by doing the ordinary things of everyday life well. Holiness doesn’t necessarily mean doing extraordinary things. God invites us to do the little things of everyday life with great love.

Once we discover the little way, we begin to recognize that opportunities to grow in holiness are everywhere. Everything that happens every day is an opportunity for holiness. The way we interact with people, the way we work or study, and how we use our free time are all opportunities to grow in holiness.

"Holiness leaves clues."

Discussion / Reflection

  • Who is the holiest person you know? What makes that person holy?

  • What little things can you do with great love today?

  • What cross are you carrying right now?

  • Are you offering up your suffering to God to help someone else?

Breathe in me, O Holy Spirit, that my thoughts may all be holy.
Act in me, O Holy Spirit, that my work, too, may be holy.
Draw my heart, O Holy Spirit, that I love only what is holy.
Strengthen me, O Holy Spirit, to defend all that is holy.
Guard me so, O Holy Spirit, that I may always be holy.

We have created a discussion forum for the Parish of St. Timothy Confirmation Group. Every week there will be a new topic of discussion related to that week's lesson. The forum is open only to those participating in the 2020 / 2021 Confirmation preparation program.

Here's where I'll be verifying your participation.

This forum is a place for serious, courteous discussion about spiritual-related topics. I don't want to see rude or unnecessarily silly comments or questions. Any unacceptable posts will be deleted, the student will lose access to the forum and we will communicate with your parents.

This week in the forum ...

Tell me about a holy moment that happened this week?

(A holy moment happens when you are being the person God created you to be and doing what he wants you to do in that moment.)

You can send me a message below if you prefer not to use the forum.
